Day Trip Nairobi National Park Safari

Your adventure begins at 6:30 AM, when your professional driver-guide picks you up directly from your Nairobi hotel or residence. As the city slowly awakens, you leave behind the urban bustle and head toward the wild frontier just minutes away — Nairobi National Park, a wildlife gem that blends modern city life with untamed African nature.

After a 20–30 minute drive, you arrive at the main entrance (Lang’ata Gate) of the park. As you wait for the entry formalities to be completed, you may already spot animals grazing nearby — an astonishing contrast to the distant high-rise buildings of Nairobi visible just beyond the savannah.

Morning Game Drive 

Your game drive begins aboard a custom-built 4×4 safari  or Mini van vehicle with a pop-up roof that allows 360-degree views. With the golden morning light casting dramatic shadows across the plains, your guide leads you through the park’s four main ecological zones: the open grasslands, rocky gorges, acacia woodlands, and riverine forests.

During this 3.5 to 4-hour safari, you’ll have excellent chances of spotting:

• Black rhinos, one of Africa’s most endangered species, in one of the park’s secure rhino sanctuaries
• Lions, often resting on elevated terrain or stalking prey near the plains
• Giraffes, elegantly towering above the acacias
• Buffalos and zebras, grazing in herds
• Warthogs, ostriches, baboons, jackals, and antelopes such as elands and impalas
• Over 400 species of birds, from secretary birds and crowned cranes to migratory waterfowl

One of the park’s highlights is the Ivory Burning Site Monument, where over 12 tons of ivory were set ablaze in 1989 by President Moi — a bold stand against elephant poaching. Your guide may stop here to share the history and significance of this powerful conservation moment.

You’ll pause at one of the scenic picnic spots — perhaps the Kingfisher area or Hippo Pool viewpoint, where you may disembark (if permitted) to stretch your legs, enjoy refreshments, or simply soak in the tranquil ambiance of nature.

Optional Midday Visits 

Upon exiting the park by 11:30 AM or 12:00 PM, you can enhance your experience with one or two optional excursions:

1. David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (11:00 AM – 12:00 PM)

Visit the world-renowned elephant orphanage, where rescued baby elephants are rehabilitated before being reintroduced into the wild. Watch as the calves splash in mud pools and are bottle-fed by keepers, all while listening to stories of their rescue. This experience is both heartwarming and educational.

2. Giraffe Centre 

Head to nearby Lang’ata, where you’ll meet the endangered Rothschild giraffes. Climb the feeding platform to hand-feed these gentle giants and even get a “kiss” in return! Learn about the center’s conservation and breeding efforts to protect this rare giraffe species.

Lunch Break 

After a full morning of wildlife and learning, it’s time to relax over a delicious lunch. Depending on your itinerary and preferences, you can dine at:

• The Carnivore Restaurant – Famous for its African barbecue and exotic meat selections
• Nairobi Tented Camp – A serene bush experience right within the park (advance booking recommended)
• Karen Blixen Coffee Garden – A peaceful garden setting with great meals and colonial charm

Vegetarian and vegan options are available upon request.

Optional Shopping or Scenic Drive 

Time permitting, you may also stop at local craft shops or art galleries, such as Kazuri Beads Factory (for handmade ceramics and jewelry) or Utamaduni Craft Centre, for authentic souvenirs that support local artisans.

Return to Hotel 

Your guide will drop you off at your hotel or Airport for your international flight or proceed to other destinations concluding a day rich with adventure, wildlife, and culture. You’ll leave with unforgettable memories — and likely hundreds of amazing photos.
