Kenya Safari Packing List: What to Bring & What to Skip

Packing for a safari in Kenya can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. With varying climates, early mornings, and exciting game drives ahead, knowing what to pack (and what to leave behind) will make your trip smoother and more enjoyable.

At Chacal Safaris, we’ve guided travelers across Kenya’s wild landscapes for years. Here’s our expert-approved packing list, with clear advice on what you need, and what you definitely don’t.

What to Bring

1. Neutral-Colored Clothing

Stick to earthy tones like beige, olive, and khaki. These colors blend in with the environment and won’t attract insects or spook animals. Avoid bright colors and camouflage (it’s illegal in Kenya for civilians).

  • Long-sleeved shirts (for sun & insect protection)
  • Lightweight trousers or cargo pants
  • Breathable T-shirts or moisture-wicking tops
  • A warm fleece or jacket (mornings can be cold)
  • A waterproof outer layer (especially during rainy seasons)

2. Comfortable Footwear

You don’t need heavy hiking boots unless you’re doing serious trekking. For most safaris:

  • Comfortable sneakers or walking shoes
  • Sandals for the lodge or around camp
  • Flip-flops for showers/swimming

3. Sun Protection

The African sun is intense, even on cloudy days. Don’t forget:

  • Wide-brimmed hat or safari cap
  • Sunglasses (preferably polarized)
  • High-SPF sunscreen
  • Lip balm with SPF

4. Essential Gear

  • Binoculars – Crucial for spotting distant wildlife.
  • Camera & extra memory cards – Don’t rely solely on your phone!
  • Power bank – For charging devices on the go.
  • Flashlight or headlamp – Some lodges have limited lighting at night.
  • Daypack – Small, light backpack for daily game drives.

5. Personal Items

  • Basic toiletries (many lodges provide the essentials)
  • Insect repellent with DEET or natural alternative
  • Travel-sized first aid kit (include motion sickness pills, pain relievers, plasters)
  • Hand sanitizer & wet wipes
  • Any personal medication

6. Documents & Money

  • Valid passport (with at least 6 months validity)
  • E-visa (apply online in advance)
  • Travel insurance (including medical evacuation)
  • Credit card & a small amount of USD or Kenyan Shillings

What to Skip

Fancy or Formal Clothing

  • Safari is casual, even at high-end lodges. Leave your heels, dress shoes, and formal outfits at home.

Heavy Luggage

  • Most internal flights have strict weight limits (usually 15kg per person in soft bags). Skip bulky suitcases in favor of soft duffel bags.

Drones

  • These are prohibited in Kenya’s national parks without special permits.

Bright Colors & Camouflage

  • As mentioned, avoid camouflage (restricted by law) and bright reds, blues, and whites that can disturb wildlife.
  • Hair Dryers & Electronics That Use Lots of Power
  • Some lodges operate on solar power or generators. High-power devices may not be allowed.

Final Tip from Chacal Safaris

Pack light, dress smart, and focus on comfort. Kenya’s wild beauty does the rest. At Chacal Safaris, we handle all the logistics so you can simply show up, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the adventure of a lifetime.
